Why I Built This
I'm Dan Woodruff, an independent consultant. After years of saving research links, client sites,
tool references, and "read later" articles, I ended up with over 800 bookmarks in Chrome.
Maybe 40% of them were actually useful. The rest were dead pages, sites that had moved,
articles behind new paywalls, or links I'd saved during a project that ended years ago.
"I kept meaning to clean them up manually. But clicking through hundreds of links one at a time
is exactly the kind of task that never makes it onto the to-do list."
I looked for a free tool that would do this automatically inside Chrome. The options I found either
required creating an account, synced my data to an external server, or cost money for basic features.
None of that felt right for a utility this simple.
So I built Bookmark Gardening Manager. It runs completely inside your browser, costs nothing,
and does the one thing bookmark managers should do: help you keep only what's actually useful.

the extension will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that results produced by the extension
(including dead-link detection and usage tracking) will be accurate or complete.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Dan Woodruff Consulting, LLC shall not be
liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising out of
the use or inability to use this extension, including but not limited to loss of bookmarks or
data. Bookmark deletion performed through this extension is permanent and
irreversible. You are solely responsible for reviewing results before removing any
bookmarks. We strongly recommend exporting a backup of your bookmarks (Chrome menu ›
Bookmarks › Bookmark manager › Export bookmarks) before running any bulk-removal
operations.
Accuracy of Link Checking
The dead-link scanner checks URLs at the time of the scan. A link flagged as dead may be
temporarily unreachable due to server downtime, firewalls, login requirements, or network
conditions — it does not necessarily mean the page is permanently gone. Conversely, some
broken links may not be detected if the destination server returns a non-standard response.
Always review flagged results before deleting.

Privacy
All processing occurs locally within your browser. No bookmark data, URLs, visit history, or
personal information is collected, transmitted, or stored on any external server by this

Privacy Policy

Bookmark Gardening Manager ("the extension") is designed to work entirely on your own
device. It does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data.
All processing — including dead-link scanning, usage tracking, and bookmark organization —
happens locally within your copy of Chrome. No bookmark titles, URLs, browsing history, or
personal information is ever sent to Dan Woodruff Consulting, LLC or to any third party.
Data the extension accesses (and why)
To perform its single purpose — cleaning up and organizing bookmarks — the extension uses the
following Chrome permissions. Data accessed through them is used only on your device and is
never transmitted:
- Bookmarks: read your bookmarks to display, audit, and organize them, and
to remove bookmarks or folders you choose to delete.
- Browsing history: read the last-visited time of bookmarked pages so the
extension can identify bookmarks you haven't opened within a chosen time window. Only
bookmarked URLs are checked.
- Web navigation: detect when you open a page that matches one of your
bookmarks, so the extension can count how often each bookmark is actually used. Only the URL
is compared against your existing bookmarks.
- Local storage: store small amounts of data on your device — the install
date, per-bookmark visit counts and last-visited timestamps, and temporary interface state.
This never leaves your machine.
- Tabs: open a link in a new tab when you click a bookmark in a report or
open the optional donation page. The extension does not read tab contents or browsing
activity.
- Host access (all sites): the Dead Link Audit sends a network request to
each bookmarked URL to check whether the page still loads or returns an error. Only the
bookmark's own URL is requested; no page content is collected, stored, or transmitted
elsewhere.
No data collection or sharing
The extension contains no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. It does not use remote
code. It does not transfer data to third parties, does not use data for any purpose unrelated
to its single purpose, and does not use data to determine creditworthiness or for lending
purposes. No account or sign-in is required.
Donations
Donations are optional and handled entirely by Square through an external
link. If you choose to donate, your payment is processed by Square under
Square's privacy
policy. The extension itself never sees or stores your payment information.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective
date.
